What was then Europe’s largest oncology centre opened in Leeds in 2008 setting new standards of cancer care for the people of Yorkshire and surrounding counties. The Bexley Wing is a PFI project that was built in 38 months within the grounds of the existing St James’s University Hospital. The new oncology wing remains a focus for teaching and research as well as treatment.
The project included design, construction, provision and upkeep of medical equipment and lifecycle maintenance services over a 30-year concession period. The Oncology Centre includes ten linear accelerators for radiotherapy treatment, with a further two for research purposes, and is also equipped with five CT simulators, three CT scanners and two MRI scanners, a modern nuclear medicine department with five gamma cameras and a PET scanner. The Oncology Centre also contains a Gamma Knife that is provided and operated as part of a Private Patients service.
